Part of the joy of my work is turning a creative concept into reality by commissioning someone who has honed their craft over many years. Craftsmanship can bring an extraordinary touch to every element of a project from large structural and architectural features such as staircases to unique pieces of furniture or an artwork that will transform a client’s enjoyment of a space. So this is the story of why Design Production should be part of every new build or renovation project.

“Without craftsmanship, inspiration is a mere reed shaken in the wind.”

Johannes Brahms

Commissioning bespoke pieces

I wholly believe in delivering a bespoke design service with craftsmanship at its core. Over decades of experience, I have developed a commissioning process that is end-to-end, running from initial design to final production. The beauty of this process is that it draws on my creative know-how and design vision and my understanding of manufacture to create pieces that are the perfect blend of practicality and beauty.

Form and function are perfect bedfellows

Good product design is born out of observation and research – asking questions to understand the proposed function and appreciating the issues driving the need for an innovative solution.
My team is experienced in designing products and installations in response to a particular project challenge. I am passionate about securing new and exciting solutions to meet demanding specifications. The process of design is one of continuous refinement. It considers synthesis, performance and aesthetics. And every item has to perform a function.

“Our work is guided by the idea that the quality of every space can be enhanced by designing many separate pieces, which together make up an enticing whole. Taking a holistic approach, it’s important to consider not only how the product will look and function but also how it will be manufactured, transported and installed.”

A few examples of our craftsmanship commissions

The River Resin Table

Working closely with a local craftsman enabled us to create a stunning river resin table to seat ten. A signature element and talking point in a large kitchen diner scheme. Read more about the River Resin Table, Bespoke Commission.

Combining resin and wild walnut, this dining table really enhances the beauty of nature by adding an artistic modern twist and delivering striking craftsmanship perfection. Bespoke Well Cover

Having found an ancient well during basement works, it was necessary to commission a bespoke cover but one that would allow our client to admire the feature, which was lit from below and still contains water.

Home Bar Sofa Banquette

Commissioned as a response to maximising seating in a home bar, the section design of this sofa allows for the curation of different looks. I wanted to use the colours of nature and the seating section can be changed or mixed up by simply swapping them around. Locally-made fabric is framed in English Oak and button detailing adds interest and contrast. Read more about this Home Renovation, Lake District, Wine Cellar, Bar, Laundry Room

Achieving more with less

As a sustainable designer, I am resolutely committed to the design ideal of doing ‘more with less’.
By taking a biophilic approach to materials, I can ensure that the natural materials my team uses are as minimally processed as possible and that they’re locally sourced. This then creates a strong connection to the geographic location, grounding the elements.

I enjoy seeing what a product can bring to a scheme and how it improves people’s lives or enjoyment of the space, even in its smallest form. Working through the cycle of design, we always seeks to deepen our collaborations with makers and manufacturers, regularly visiting the workshops where the products are crafted.

“How we evolve a space inspires great product design, from the shape of a door handle or a bespoke staircase to a sofa specifically made to consider a client’s height and deliver optimal comfort.”
